Homework at St Wilfrid's

At St Wilfrid's, we believe that success comes through consistent effort and the development of positive Learning Habits. One of our Learning Habits is for pupils to complete all homework. 

To support the completion of homework, pupils participate in daily Morning Meetings with their tutors where they complete their 100% work. 

All pupils are provided with a 100% Book, which contains the key knowledge, vocabulary and skills they need to learn in each subject.

The purpose of the 100% Book is to utilise retrieval practice to strengthen learning and improve long-term memory. Retrieval practice helps pupils recall previously learned material, strengthening memory pathways and making it easier to access knowledge in the future. By regularly revisiting and recalling key information, pupils establish a secure knowledge base that enables them to develop higher-order skills such as understanding, analysis and evaluation more effectively in lessons.

Retrieval practice is most effective when it is repeated regularly. For this reason, 100% work is completed daily as homework by all pupils and is set during Morning Meeting. Pupils should use the Look, Cover, Write, Check, Respond method to learn the content from the key skills, key knowledge and key vocabulary sections of the designated 100% sheet.

The Look, Cover, Write, Check, Respond Process

1. Look

Pupils should carefully read through the assigned 100% sheet, including saying each key vocabulary term aloud.

2. Cover and Write

This is the active stage of the process. Pupils should cover the information and then recall as much as possible from memory, recording everything they can remember from the key skills, key knowledge and key vocabulary sections. This may include:

• Definitions of key vocabulary
• Key facts and information
• Diagrams and labels where appropriate

3. Check

After completing their recall, pupils should uncover the original information and check the accuracy of their work. Using a green pen, they should correct spelling errors, add missing information and amend any inaccuracies.

4. Respond

The final stage allows pupils to apply their knowledge by answering a series of questions linked to the content they have learned.

Daily Retrieval

To maximise the benefits of retrieval practice, pupils will be quizzed regularly on the content of their 100% Book during Morning Meeting, as well as through retrieval activities within lessons.

These opportunities to recall learning will:

• Strengthen long-term retention of knowledge
• Identify gaps in learning
• Build confidence and academic success
• Support pupils in becoming independent, self-regulated learners

Assessments will be accessible to all pupils and will consist of a mixture of short-answer and multiple-choice questions.

Expectations

1. All pupils will complete their 100% work every day. This will be recorded in a green exercise book to encourage pride in presentation and learning.

2. Form tutors will check, sign and date completed work during Morning Meeting.

3. Staff will regularly model and reinforce the correct use of the Look, Cover, Write, Check, Respond process to ensure pupils gain the maximum benefit from retrieval practice.

4. The 100% Book will also be used within lessons wherever appropriate to support learning and strengthen long-term recall.

5. Pupils who do not complete their 100% work correctly will be required to make corrections. Where necessary, additional support and intervention will be provided to ensure all pupils develop effective study habits.

The successful use of the 100% Booklets directly supports our Core Learning Habits: 

• Respectful - taking pride in their learning, following staff instructions, demonstrating positive conduct, and wearing the correct uniform every day. 

• Responsible - maintaining excellent attendance and punctuality, bringing all required equipment, including their 100% Booklet, and taking ownership of their learning. 

• Resilient - remaining on task in lessons, persevering when learning is challenging, and completing homework consistently to a high standard. 

Each booklet includes a homework schedule at the front, outlining when pupils are expected to complete and review their learning. In addition to booklet-based homework: 

• Pupils will continue to receive additional homework in Mathematics. 

• Key Stage 4 pupils will also receive additional homework from their option subjects and some core subjects where appropriate. 

The 100% Booklet is considered a piece of core school equipment, alongside items such as pens and exercise books. Pupils are expected to have their booklet with them at all times and bring it to school every day. 

As the booklets are essential learning resources, any lost booklet will need to be replaced at a cost of £1.50.
