Sport
Sport and exercise is a huge and rapidly expanding global industry, while levels of public fitness and participation in physical activity are issues on the political agenda. This Level 3 Sport qualification is equivalent to one A Level and develops the knowledge, skills and experience needed to progress into sport, exercise, health and fitness-related pathways.

Year 12
Students begin by building core knowledge of how the body responds to exercise and how to design effective fitness programmes.
You will study:
- Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology (120 GLH) – understanding the structure and function of the body systems involved in sport and exercise.
- Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being (120 GLH) – learning how to assess fitness, plan training and promote health and well-being.
Year 13
In Year 13, students focus on the skills needed to work in the sports industry and to lead others safely and effectively in physical activity.
You will study:
- Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industry (60 GLH) – exploring career pathways, professional skills and expectations in sport-related roles.
- Unit 4: Sports Leadership (60 GLH) – planning, leading and reviewing sports sessions, developing confidence and leadership skills.
Assessment Components
Units 1 & 2
Units 3 & 4
Units 1 and 2 are examination units and are externally assessed. The remaining units are internally assessed controlled coursework units, completed under the guidance of PE staff and moderated accordingly.
Opportunities
This qualification provides a strong platform for progression to university degree courses such as BSc Sport Science, Sport Management, Sport and Exercise Development, Sport, Exercise, Health and Fitness, Sports Development, Sports Coaching or Sports Marketing, as well as relevant college courses and employment.
The course is ideal if you are considering a career in the sporting industry, for example PE teaching, coaching, physiotherapy, sports nutrition, fitness instruction, sports development, sports management and related roles.
Entrance Requirements
Essential 5 GCSEs at grades 9–4 with no specific subject requirement.
