Biology

Biology involves the study of a wide range of exciting topics, from molecular biology to the study of ecosystems and from microorganisms to mammoths. Biology is constantly in the headlines: the human genome has been sequenced, revealing the arrangement of three thousand million DNA bases, while global challenges such as AIDS in Kenya or the destruction of Bornean rainforests for oil palm production highlight the importance of biological understanding. Biologists work across cell biology, medicine, food production and ecology, and their work is vital to us all.

Biology

Year 12

Students begin by studying core biological principles including biological molecules, cells, exchange with the environment and genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms. Many students who take Biology also study subjects such as psychology, sociology, PE, chemistry, physics, health and social care or environmental studies.

These foundations introduce students to the scale and diversity of living systems, preparing them for deeper study in Year 13.

Year 13

Students extend their knowledge through topics such as energy transfers in and between organisms, responses to environmental change, genetics, populations, evolution, ecosystems and the control of gene expression.

Assessment is carried out by AQA through three written examination papers, each lasting two hours.

Opportunities

Biology is an excellent choice for students considering health or science-based careers including medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, physiotherapy, pharmacy, optometry, nursing, zoology, marine biology or forensic science.

It provides a strong foundation for further study at university and for entering scientific and clinical professions.

Entrance Requirements

Essential Grade 66 in Combined Science or Grade 6 in Biology.

Desirable Grade 6 in English and Grade 6 in Maths.
